Project: 50 Rules For Sons, Book Design
About The Concepts: Tim Hoch was born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is a 1985 graduate of Texas Christian University. He obtained his law degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1988 and had practiced law in Fort Worth, Texas since that time. Tim was inspired by his son to author 50 Rules for Sons.
Mr. Hoch has assembled many rules during his life, from simple to more complex that helped him through life situations: Rules he’s used to living his life by and later intended to benefit, support and guide his family. Tim turned words into important and powerful tools to help sons of all ages and backgrounds grow and mature to be their best. Rules that help boys of all ages make the right decisions in life. Departing advice and wisdom that only a parent can learn from a lifetime of experiences.
When Hoch and Utley were introduced, an instant rapport was established. Soon after their discussion, Steve began creating concept designs for Tim’s book. The look and feel that Utley conveyed was that of capturing the vital bond forged between a father and son or a single image that represented the thought, by using simple and unique images of boys and their fathers to illustrate each of Tim’s rules. Below are the concept book covers created and presented to Tim. He chose the design of Book cover concept four as he described the focus of the single portrait image of the freckled-faced eleven-year-old Jason as an honest representation of his ideal thoughts of what he imagined in his mind's eye of what he wanted to project on the books cover.
